The moment summer rolls around my mood instantly lifts... But, my skin on the other hand, is a completely different story. Between a long winter covered up from head to toe and the chilly winter air drying out my skin, it can begin to look a little lack luster. Let’s just say that my glow disappears quicker than my famous hedgehog slice did on Christmas day!

The good news is that hydrated, sun-kissed skin is definitely achievable, even when you’re trying to be sun safe. In fact, using a gentle, natural tanner during summer is one of the easiest ways to keep your skin even, hydrated and glowing all through the warm weather.

As someone who has been fake tanning for well over a decade (I’ve been every end of the spectrum - from translucent to looking like an oompa loompa) I’ve learned what works, what doesn’t and how to achieve an effortless golden tone that looks like you’ve just returned from a Euro trip.

Pre-Tan Prep

The key to the perfect tan really is ensuring proper exfoliation and hydration before your self-tan application to create the smoothest application and prevent patchiness.

I know that this is the part that most people tend to rush, but it really is make or break when trying to achieve a natural tan. But, with the right preparation before your application, you too can achieve a natural looking glow whether you’re a tanning connoisseur or completely new to fake tanning altogether.

The great thing about a gradual tanning lotion and face tanning water is that application is quite simple - but what is most important is your pre-tan preparation and post-tan care.

Here’s my tried and tested pre-tan prep routine:

1. Exfoliate 24 hours before fake tanning to remove dry skin so your tan absorbs evenly
2. Moisturise lightly the night before, as hydrated skin tends to hold onto colour better
3. Shave or wax 48 hours in advance of tanning to avoid dotted pores and patchy areas
4. Moisturise elbows, knees and ankles right before tanning as these spots love absorbing a little too much tan
   

Fake Tan Application Tips

It’s important when applying your Natio tan, to apply in thin, even layers to give you the most natural looking summer glow.

Our Bronzing Glow Gradual Tanning Lotion and Radiant Glow Facial Tan Water are incredibly simple to apply, making them the low-maintenance, easy solution for beginners or anyone wanting an easy summer tanning routine.

For the body

Use our Self-Tan Application Mitt on clean, dry skin and work the lotion in long sweeping motions, followed by circular motions to blend the product in. For tricky areas such as the hands, wrists and feet, use our Blurring Contour Body Buffing Brush for a seamless result. With our gradual tan, you can apply as many layers as you want and build your colour day by day, depending on the depth of tan you want to achieve. Make sure to wipe excess tan from nails and between fingers and avoid perfume or deodorant immediately after applying.

For the face

Apply 6-12 drops of our Radiant Glow Facial Tan Water to clean clean hands and smooth evenly onto the face. To prevent “fake tan hands”, alternatively use our Blurring Contour Body Buffing Brush and apply the drops directly onto the brush before applying to the face. Our tan water absorbs quickly, won’t transfer onto clothes and develops into a soft, glowing tan.

Post-Tan Care

To keep that summer glow lasting, daily hydration and gentle maintenance will help your tan last longer and fade evenly overtime.

It’s important moisturise every day to keep your colour looking smooth and even. Exfoliate only as the tan begins to fade, then reapply using the Bronzing Glow Gradual Tanning Lotion or refresh your complexion with a few drops of the Radiant Glow Facial Tan Water.

Reground’s guide to a low waste festive season

Each year, Australians throw out around 7.6 million tonnes of food. And while that is a year-round problem, CSIRO reports that total household waste increases by up to thirty percent during the Christmas period. Most of this extra waste comes from buying more than we need including perfectly good food that we simply do not get to in time.

The good news is that a little planning goes a long way. With a few small habits, you can enjoy every celebration and keep waste to a minimum.

One of the most helpful tools that guides our work at Reground is the waste hierarchy, which shows the order of actions that have the biggest impact: avoiding, minimising, reuse, recycling, and finally landfill as a last resort.

Here’s how to keep all the joy (and ditch the waste) this festive season 

Avoid 

• The best waste is the waste we never create. 
• Plan portions so you only buy what will actually be eaten. 
• Skip the last minute “just in case” shop as it’s one of the biggest contributors to thrown-out food. 
• Check use by dates so everything you buy fits your schedule. 
• And for gifting? Skip the guesswork. Ask people what they actually want.   
• If you love the surprise element of gifting, experiences make brilliant gifts for those hard to buy for. 
  

Minimise 

• When avoiding is not possible, the next best step is to reduce how much you buy. 
• Choose ingredients that work across multiple dishes. 
• Keep wrapping simple so you’re not buying materials that will immediately become rubbish. 
• Serve smaller portions first - everyone can go back for seconds (and let’s be honest, our eyes are often bigger than our belly at Christmas time). 

Reuse 

• This is where creativity comes to life. 
• Turn leftovers into something new. Use an AI tool to generate a recipe from whatever you have in the fridge. Have fun with it! 
• Freeze extra meals or ingredients before they spoil. 
• Save gift bags, ribbons and sturdy wrapping. Be the thrifty friend who values the environment over brand new packaging.  

Recycle 

• Recycling still matters, it just comes later in the hierarchy.  
• Clean cardboard, glass and cans can go straight into your yellow recycling bin. 
• Avoid buying soft plastics and mixed materials where possible, as most local councils cannot recycle them. 
• Simple paper wrapping is the easiest material to recycle. 
• Take your drink cans to your local Container Deposit Scheme drop off point.

And remember, small acts add up. 
Even one or two changes can make a big impact during the festive season.

As the weather cools down, I find myself drawn to a seasonal ritual, of cleaning out my bathroom cupboard and letting go of things that no longer serve me. There is something about spending time indoors that inspires me to reassess my beauty collection and to pull out those forgotten items lurking in the back of the cabinet.

Inevitably, during my most recent cleanout I rediscovered my collection of makeup brushes. These trusty tools are indispensable for creating our winter looks, but we are constantly dipping them in powders, creams and liquids and tossing them into makeup bags, creating the perfect breeding grounds for bacteria.

Dermatologists recommend regular cleaning to prevent the buildup of product residue, dirt and oil, which can lead to unexpected breakouts, skin irritation and even infection. You know your brushes need replacing when they start losing their shape, shedding bristles excessively or developing an odour.

Cleaning your brushes doesn’t have to be a tiresome chore; it can form part of your wellness routine. After all, it’s all about looking after your skin. So, why not light a candle with your favourite, calming scent (maybe our soy wax blend Relax candle) or pop on a diffuser to help turn this task into something to look forward to.

Make sure the water is lukewarm and rinse the excess product off the bristles of the brush. Avoid submerging your brush so the glue isn’t impacted, and the brush material isn't damaged.

There are plenty of options when it comes to cleaning your brushes, but why not use something gentle that is intended for your face. Try our Gentle Micellar Cleansing Water or Rosewater Hydration Antioxidant Micellar Cleansing Water to help purify and remove makeup from your makeup tools.

Avoid using plain soap and water as this can dry out the brushes.

Pro Tip: For a quick refresh, keep some micellar water in a small spray bottle to spritz on brushes between deep cleans. Swirl on a towel or paper towel to remove residue.

Apply micellar water to each brush head and swirl the brushes in circular motions in a shallow bowl. Rinse and repeat until the liquid is clear.

Now that they’ve had some tender loving care, you can gently squeeze the excess liquid from the brush heads with a towel, reshape the bristles and lay them flat on the towel or use a makeup brush holder, pointing the bristles down to avoid loosening the glue in the ferrule. Leave the brushes for 24 hours to dry completely before storing them upright.

Pro Tip: You might want to invest in a textured silicone cleaning mat to work out stubborn products.

Clean brushes perform better, distributing makeup evenly and blending effortlessly. This winter, reset your brush collection with the steps above. Your skin will thank you!

Once your palette has been loved and you’re ready to go through the grieving process (of having to let it go) follow along with this 5 step guide to recycling:

Step one:

Pull out the removable mirror and keep it for years to come. Personally, I take mine with me whenever I’m getting ready at a friend’s house for girls’ night or in the car when I’m running late and have to do a last minute (and sadly rushed) makeup look once I've arrived at my destination. It is the perfect size - small enough to fit in my makeup bag and little car compartment but big enough to see the reflection of my entire face and makeup look.

Step two:

Pull on the small brown elastic band until both ends are removed from the palette. What's my favourite part of this step you ask? Turning it into a hair band! I don’t know about you, but I have to search my entire house for hair ties regularly as somehow I always lose them. Having a new hair tie that also matches my hair colour is like I've struck gold! 

Step three:

Peel back on the cardboard backing from the underside of the palette until it is completely removed (this and the next few steps are like free ASMR). Recycle this backing.

Step four:

This one has to be my favourite of the five steps (it is quite satisfying). Using a paper clip, push through the small holes on the underside of the palette to remove the eyeshadow pans. Once removed, clean the residual product with warm water.

Step five:

The last step! Make sure you have recycled all twelve eyeshadow pans and cardboard into your curbside recycling.

As the cooler months start to emerge its time to review your skincare routine to make sure you are protecting your skin and preparing it for the months spent enjoying winter pursuits.
